Become a Paraprofessional in Alameda County Schools
Are you interested in making a meaningful impact in education? Becoming a paraprofessional for school districts in Alameda County is a great way to begin—and grow—a rewarding career in the field. As a paraprofessional, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience supporting students, including those with special needs, while working alongside experienced educators.
Paraprofessionals play a vital role in the classroom. Under the guidance of a credentialed teacher, they provide instructional and behavioral support to meet the diverse needs of students.
At the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), we've developed multiple pathways to help individuals become well-qualified paraprofessionals:
The purpose of the programs are to train and support candidates in becoming well qualified paraprofessionals in Alameda County, thereby enhancing support for local school districts. As paraprofessionals, candidates gain valuable experience assisting students, including those with special needs, and can develop their careers in education.
Para Institute
This 4-week intensive, in-person training program is designed for individuals committed to full-time preparation for a paraprofessional role. Participants receive $3,000 in paid training, along with comprehensive instructional strategies, test prep, CPR certification, career readiness support, and a $250 stipend to cover onboarding expenses such as fingerprinting and Live Scan.
When: Weekdays, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Dates: July 7, 2025 – August 4, 2025
Format: In-person training with hands-on learning experience

This pathway is perfect for those who are committed to daily attendance and want to gain deeper insights into the paraeducator role.

Path to Para
This is a 12-week evening program designed for individuals currently working in other roles who are looking to transition into education. Participants receive professional development, instructional resources, and application support to help them become qualified paraeducators. Incentives are offered based on attendance and successful placement in a paraeducator role of up to $1,000.
When: Thursdays, 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM
Dates: June 5, 2025 – August 28, 2025
Format: In-person sessions focused on job readiness and certification support

This pathway is ideal for those unable to commit to daily attendance but eager to gain deeper insights into the paraprofessional role through weekly Thursday evening sessions.

This is a focused, one-hour tutoring session offered specifically on the day of the CODESP exam. If you’re registered for the test, you’ll receive an invitation to join Power Hour.
