School Counselor Residency
The Alameda County Office of Education’s School Counselor Residency Program, developed in partnership with California State University East Bay, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Saint Mary’s College and the University of San Francisco is a bold investment in the future of education. This initiative is reshaping the School Counseling profession by preparing a new generation of highly skilled, equity-driven School Counselors who reflect the lived experiences and backgrounds of the students and communities they serve.

School Counselor Residency Program Overview

More than a pathway to a credential, our program is a commitment to sustainability, access, and impact. By supporting the growth, well-being, and leadership development of aspiring School Counselors, we are cultivating professionals who will champion mental health, academic success, and social-emotional development, especially for our most vulnerable students across Alameda County.

 

Key Features of the Residency

1-Year Residency: Takes place during the 2nd (or final year) of a Master’s in School Counseling program at Cal State East Bay, SF State, San Jose State, St. Mary's or the University of San Francisco. 

  • Earn a $31,000 Stipend 
  • Receive 1:1 Mentorship
  • Build Community Through our Cohort Model
  • Hands-On Training & Experiential Learning

 

 

Residency Requirements

  1. Plan to enroll or currently enrolled in a School Counseling MA/PPS Credential program at Cal State East Bay, SF State, San Jose State, St. Mary's or the University of San Francisco
  2. Commit to working in an Alameda County school district for at least four years after completing the residency

Make an Impact as a Mentor School Counselor

Become a Mentor School Counselor

Earn a $5,000 stipend for each over the course of the 1 year Residency.

  • Do you have at least three years of experience as a school counselor?
  • Do you currently hold a clear Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential with a specialization in School Counseling?

Interested in Becoming a Mentor School Counselor?

  • Host a resident at your school site for 3 days per week
  • 1:1 Weekly Supervision
  • Monthly Professional Enrichment Workshops
  • Observation & Feedback
  • Model Best Practices
