The Numeracy Project
Scholastic Inc. has collaborated with the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) and the Alameda County Office of Education in the development and publication of a new version of the Numeracy Project. This new version of the Numeracy Project provides teachers with fresh tools to provide high need students with the support they need to be successful with mathematics.
The Challenge

Since 2006, California students must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in order to graduate. The CAHSEE includes Mathematics and English Language Arts sections. While the percentage of California students passing the CAHSEE is increasing, there are still subgroups that consistently score below passing. In particular, students in alternative settings, students in English Learner and Special Education programs, and economically disadvantaged students tend to pass at lower rates than the California average.
The Numeracy Project Answers the Challenge for Mathematics
The Numeracy Project is designed to enhance student understanding of concepts and skills tested in the mathematics section of the CAHSEE. It features targeted content for students with weak skills, tiered lessons for mixed ability group teaching, and strategic classroom presentations that promote student success. The program is designed as a year long course but can be modified to fit into a shorter time frame.
Alameda County Office of Education
Alameda County Office of Education serves as the professional development lead for the Numeracy Project. If you have any questions regarding the Numeracy Project or training workshops, contact Dolores Ragusa by phone (510-670-4252) or e-mail doloresr@acoe.org.
